Converting YouTube videos to audio files is actually pretty straightforward once you know your options.

I've spent years downloading audio for offline listening, and I'm going to walk you through the best methods in 2025.

The Easiest Way: Online Converters

When I need a quick conversion, I typically use an online tool like AIseo

These work right in your browser without installing anything.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Copy the YouTube video URL

  2. Go to AIseo

  3. Paste the URL into the box

  4. Click "Convert"

  5. Wait about 5-10 seconds

  6. Download your MP3

I like this method because it takes less than a minute from start to finish. The downside? Some online converters can be sketchy with ads or pop-ups, so stick with reputable ones like AIseo,  HireQuotient or Ytmp3.

More Control: Desktop Software

If you convert videos regularly or need higher quality, desktop software gives you more options.

I've had good results with 4K YouTube to MP3.

The process is similar:

  1. Install the software (one-time setup)

  2. Copy-paste the YouTube URL

  3. Select your preferred audio format and quality

  4. Choose where to save the file

  5. Click "Convert" and wait

The free version of 4K YouTube to MP3 limits you to 15 videos per day, which is plenty for most people.

Quick Access: Browser Extensions

If you're constantly converting videos, a browser extension puts the feature right on your YouTube page.

For Chrome, I've used MP3 Converter with good results.

After installing the extension:

  1. Watch any YouTube video

  2. Click the extension icon

  3. Select your quality preference

  4. Download directly

Firefox users can try YouTube™ to MP3 for similar functionality.

On-the-Go: Mobile Apps

When I'm away from my computer, mobile apps let me download audio directly to my phone.

For Android, YouMP34 works well:

  1. Install the app

  2. Search for videos or paste URLs

  3. Select MP3 format

  4. Download to your device

iOS is more restrictive with these types of apps, but MP3 Converter offers similar functionality when available.

For Tech People: Command-Line Tools

I occasionally use command-line tools like yt-dlp (formerly youtube-dl) combined with ffmpeg. This method requires some technical knowledge but gives you maximum control.

A basic command looks like:

yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 [YouTube URL]

This extracts the audio directly as an MP3 file. You can add parameters to adjust quality, metadata tags, and more.

Important Legal Stuff

Let's talk about the elephant in the room: not all conversions are legal.

I've learned this the hard way.

Converting videos generally violates YouTube's Terms of Service if you're downloading copyrighted content without permission.

That's why many conversion tools disappear or change URLs frequently.

Some general guidelines:

  • It's safer to convert videos you created yourself

  • Public domain content is usually fair game

  • Educational content under fair use might be acceptable

  • Music, shows, and commercial content typically aren't legal to convert

I'm not giving legal advice here—just sharing what I've learned.

Your safest bet is only converting content you have rights to use.

Which Method Should You Choose?

After years of converting videos, here's my advice:

  • If you just need a quick, one-off conversion: Use AIseo or another online converter

  • If you convert videos weekly: Install 4K YouTube to MP3

  • If you convert directly from YouTube often: Add a browser extension

  • If you're mostly on your phone: Get a mobile app

  • If you're tech-savvy and need automation: Use command-line tools

The method you choose really depends on how often you'll use it and your comfort level with technology.

Have you tried converting YouTube videos before? Let me know if you have questions about any of these methods!
